Gender Difference When Negotiating Salary - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

Gender Difference When Negotiating Salary - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career For both genders, anxiety before the interview may be present, but studies show that women handle it better. Women adapt more proactively than men do. Women seek social support from colleagues and friends more than men do. And women are more prone to do mock interviews with those colleagues and friends more than men are. Men are more prone to ignore such communication by instead watching TV or doing things to relieve stress, but those things hinder their interview performance later. There’s also a difference between men and women in general communication style, which needs to be understood as a part of the job interview. On one hand, men  start with the headlines and then elaborate on them and provide specifics. They like to deal with the big picture. On the other hand, women’s ideas are almost the opposite of that. Women feel context is essential for understanding. Many women, before telling you the headlines, will want to preface the situation by setting up the context. In terms of interviewing, remember that when women communicate, they’re concerned with building connections. When men communicate, they’re concerned with establishing status and presenting accomplishments up front to establish their credentials. Women think a bit differently. Boasting and bragging are not their preferred styles, although the interview is indeed about selling yourself. Women communicate in order to build connections. In the middle of a conversation, one woman might say to another, “I love your shawl.” The other woman might respond with, “Oh, my sister-in-law bought it for me in London for my birthday.” This is an example of establishing connections. Men don’t typically feel comfortable giving such compliments to each other, because such an exchange would consist of personal information. Salary negotiation Men and women do use the same mechanics, but they differ in their strategy. Their personality, style, and culture are all contributing factors that influence the outcome of the conversation. Women appreciate relationships over outcomes and therefore are willing to compromise. They do not like confrontation, and many women associate salary negotiation with conflict. Men ask for a particular salary with less compromise and are concerned with outcomes. They worry less about how their negotiations affect the relationship. Women may make salary decisions on what they feel they need rather than on what the job should pay. Therefore, they’re at risk of receiving less-competitive packages than their male counterparts do. Men are more direct when negotiating salary. Historically, it’s been acceptable for men to be assertive in the business world, while women who are assertive tend to be viewed as aggressive or difficult to work with. Before any salary negotiations take place, job seekers are advised to find out their market value. There are Web sites that can assist in finding such information. Some of them are www.salary.com, www.payscale.com, and www.glassdoor.com.

How to Balance Your Day and Stay Sane - Classy Career Girl

How to Balance Your Day and Stay Sane Do you ever feel like your life is a juggling act? You wake up in the morning and you pack the lunches, find lost socks, make breakfast, and are excited to get out the door in time, only to find yourself stuck in traffic having road rage and its only 8:00 AM? The rest of your day is filled with meetings at work, delivering forgotten homework or lunches, escaping from work to volunteer at the school, rushing back to work, rushing to the gym to try to fit in a workout, rushing home to get kids, and driving them to soccer, ballet, baseball or whatever their current activities are. You breathe for a moment and then it’s time to make dinner. After dinner comes homework, baths, and chores. After getting the kids into bed, you collapse exhausted on the couch, hoping to get just a minute of quality time with your husband but instead find yourself falling asleep knowing that when you wake up the day will be staring at you reminding you that you have to do it all over again! How do you get off the never-ending hamster wheel that we all experience as women and as moms? How can we learn to balance it all, live in the present, and enjoy this season of our lives? Its never perfect, but there are 5 key things Ive learned that have helped me to experience joy and not pull my hair out even through the chaos! How to Balance Your Day and Stay Sane 1. Focus What do I mean by focus? I mean giving 100% to whatever you are working on. For example, if it is time to answer emails, only answer emails. Do not take incoming calls or put on a load of laundry, just focus on the task at hand. Another great example that I know many of us struggle with is giving 100% focus to our kids. I often turn off my phone or at least leave it in the other room when I want to have quality time with my kids. I promise this makes such a huge difference and our children notice when we are focused on just them and it increases their self-esteem and helps them feel special and important. 2. Plan Your Day the Day Before it Starts I know it sounds simple, but incorporating this one technique can make a world of difference in your life. Take 5 minutes before you go to bed to schedule out in your planner what you will be doing the next day. Include everything in your day including your workout and cleaning time. Also, make a list of things you need to get done. When you take control of your day, your day is less likely to take control of you! I challenge you to try it and see how your productivity increases! [RELATED: How to Find This Elusive Work-Life Balance] 3. Eat That Frog I don’t mean you actually eat a frog, I know this one sounds crazy but what it really means is do the hardest thing on your to-do list first. Take your list that you created the night before, highlight the top 5 things to get done and start with the hardest! Often times I know I am guilty of starting with the easiest and then the hardest sometimes does not get accomplished, but when you start with the hardest, you ensure you will get it done and feel successful on top of that! 4. Positive Affirmations This is a big step in your sanity that many people never do. Positive affirmations are something you say in the present tense even if it is not true yet. For example, I could say, “I am a successful entrepreneur who makes a 6 figure income.” Although this is not true yet, my brain doesn’t know the difference. There are actual pathways in the brain that get stronger when you feed them, so when you feed them positivity, they believe it! 5. Do Something For You! How many times do we tend to everyone else’s needs and not our own? You need to take care of you so you can take care of your family. Find something you love, whether it is running, going to the spa, or a bubble bath. This step will help you keep sane is this chaotic life you live! I believe if you implement these strategies you will find yourself more productive and enjoying life to the fullest!

Are You Making These 10 Common Mistakes at The Gym -

Are You Making These 10 Common Mistakes at The Gym - As people begin to think about New Year’s Resolutions and Fitness Goals, you must remember just paying for a membership doesn’t guarantee the results you want.    Many people start their year off buying a gym membership and new gym attire. While the first step to transforming your body is, in fact, deciding to commit to restructuring your lifestyle at the gym and in the kitchen, it is common for people to make mistakes that jeopardize their progress. These mistakes can chip away at their enthusiasm to work out and ultimately result in people giving up on their goals. “As a trainer, my job consists of helping clients assess where they are and where they want to be. Giving them a clear pathway helps avoid mistakes that often cause people to quit too soon and forfeit their goals,”  says Vince Sant, the co-founder and lead trainer of   V Shred. Vince says these are some of the most common mistakes people make when starting off their fitness journey. Failing to Assess Your Body “Trainers and gym staff see this all the time. People who are new to working out and   get a few workouts from a friend and head into the gym without analyzing their bodies with a trainer.” This becomes harmful because these people are not trained to pinpoint their body’s imbalances, where their weaknesses lie and how their body is compensating subconsciously.   “They go to the gym pay for the membership and spend months doing exercises incorrectly and damaging their joints and their back.” Failing to Set Realistic Goals Nowadays a lot of people scroll through social media and try and mimic the amount of weight being lifted and want a six pack in two weeks. Contrary to popular belief, fitness models and trainers don’t start off deadlifting 200 lbs. They train for months, maybe years, perfecting their form. When you set major goals with an unrealistic time frame you are setting yourself up for disappointment. “A lot of what a trainer does is manage your goals and give you honest timelines to get you there. We cheerlead you through the rough times and the plateaus,” says Sant. Consistency is Key New gym goers lose their excitement over working out a few weeks in. They start skipping workouts and making excuses. This will add to the time it will take for you to reach your goals and may even hinder your enthusiasm overall. Push yourself through the first few months of working out and eating nutritiously. Make a habit out of working out. Consistency will become easier once you start seeing those desired results Delaying Your Workouts Into The Night We get it. People work tremendously hard and they have errands to run and people to care for. People want to sleep as much as possible. “Here’s a pro tip: If you want consistency to be an easier hurdle to overcome… Plan to workout in the morning. In life, things come up and schedules change. The morning will always be more available than your night. We also tend to make more excuses at night and let things override our plans to work out,” says Sant. Giving Up When You Hit A Plateau If you hit a plateau it means you have consistently been doing the same routine for an extended period of time. Kudos for the consistency, but that is just one part of getting the results you want. “You need to learn or get guidance on how to effectively change your workouts to continue challenging your muscles and prevent your body from falling into a comfort zone with your regular routine,” explains Sant. Overdoing the Cardio Don’t misunderstand, cardio is an important part of any fitness journey especially one that is centered around weight loss. However, in the eagerness of the first few weeks people who start going to the gym concentrate overwhelmingly on cardio and needlessly exhaust their body. Trainers see it all the time, people who spend 2 hours on the elliptical. You’d be better served to do a 30-minute cardio session followed by light weights and circuit training. Remember you want to strengthen the muscle as well. Unorganized Lifting When you are working on weight training you have to educate yourself on what exercises belong in a superset together and how much is wise to lift when shooting for a certain amount of repetitions. “Gym goers often lift too heavy making it difficult to complete a set or too light, failing to challenge the muscle,” says Sant. It is important that you don’t lift too heavy out of vanity and that you don’t too light out of laziness. When doing supersets (two different movements, one after the other you without rest it is important that you learn about the movements that go together as one might affect your form for the other and open you up for injury. Record Your Progress Failing to record the amount of weights and repetitions per set that you can lift per movement easily leads to plateaus and lack of interest. If you don’t record what you are doing then you have no way of increasing intensity meaning you will not get any better. “Working out without a clear goal for each movement can become boring. You lose interest and consciousness about what you are doing. Record what you are doing, perform it consistently and then increase intensity to avoid plateaus. Stretch For many, stretching is common sense. Many people still ignore the importance of it. Working out without stretching can lead to reduced muscle mind connection, poor form and muscle strain. Stretching helps your range of motion and aids in preparing you mentally and physically for the workout ahead. Failing to take an Active Rest Day Many people go all out the first few weeks of their fitness training looking desperately for quick results. This is not wise. Taking a rest day allows your muscles to heal. An active rest day is a day where instead of training at full power you incorporate some sort of low-intensity cardio or HIIT training. This way you keep your body active and don’t let any soreness settle in while still resting from your much more comprehensive workouts. It is important that before beginning a fitness journey you assess where you are and where you want to be. How Technology Has Changed Healthcare Degrees and Careers

How Technology Has Changed Healthcare Degrees and Careers Technology has touched every aspect of life over the past few decades. It has reshaped how we conduct business, entertain ourselves and stay in touch with our friends. It has revolutionized healthcare, changing how we train for healthcare careers and how we take care of patients.Online SchoolsBefore the advent of online schools, one had to either move to be near a healthcare training school or find one within commutable distance. Today, it is possible to take a class or earn a healthcare degree from anywhere in the world that has a reliable internet connection.evalStudents are often able to complete coursework requirements around their work schedules and family commitments, making online schooling a convenient choice. Moreover, since online education connects current and future healthcare professionals from a wide variety of backgrounds and perspectives, there’s an opportunity to connect with different perspectives, skill sets, and backgrounds.Simulation Manikins and ExperiencesWhet her a program is online or in-person, technology routinely provides students with simulated experiences that give them a much more realistic preview of clinical scenarios than is possible to obtain from merely reading a textbook.Simulation manikins are manikins outfitted with special sensors, speakers and pulsating silicone “flesh.” Pulse rate, lung sounds and other variables can be changed via computer as students examine their “patient.”Completely virtual simulations are also used to mimic real time experiences and body sounds frequently encountered in clinical practice. Preparing in a technology-rich environment is also solid preparation for accurately and efficiently monitoring patient health status using the monitors, machines and programs that are now the standard in patient care.Healthcare InformaticsTechnology is so central to patient care that it has even spawned a field of its own. Healthcare informatics is the analysis and improvement of the ways in which health i nformation is obtained and used in relation to medicine.Health informatics specialists design, implement, evaluate and research patient care data systems, specializing in tasks including database design, data analysis, programing and strategic planning. Career expert Shame on Target for rescinding job offers

Career expert Shame on Target for rescinding job offers Career expert Shame on Target for rescinding job offers According to this article, dozens of soon-to-be Target employees were told that their formal job offers were rescinded. Just like that. Poof. Sorry. Never mind. Target explained it away by saying there had been a strategic change in direction, in part, …in light of the changing needs of our business, we have elected not to move forward with bringing them on board at this time. We apologized to each of them and communicated the decision as soon as it was made to help allow the individuals to adjust their plans. According to the article, about 40 people were made offers late last summer, accepted them, and made important changes in their lives to begin their new careers. In the case of one recent college grad in California, he said he had already lined up an apartment in Minneapolis and bought his plane ticket to start his new job in January. He had been offered the job in November and had it rescinded on New Years Eve due to no fault of his own. To have the rug pulled out from under them several weeks later on the basis of strategy change is flat-out irresponsible and weak. Target had choices. With more than 350,000 employees, the company could have offered different positions to these 40 people. Or it could have honored its commitment to hire them, train them in the jobs they were hired for, and then redeploy them to other positions within Target. While I am not a lawyer, I am fairly certain that rescinding offers is absolutely legal. As a matter of fact, in most written offers, a company makes it clear that background checks and other processes need to be completed prior to a committed start date â€" and the offer can be rescinded. But these 40 people did not fail a background check, commit a crime, or have a low credit score. Job searching is hard enough. Now this, Target? Are you aware of the impact you made? These employees most likely spent months applying for and interviewing for the Target position they ultimately won in this highly competitive job market. Then once they received the initial offer from the Target hiring manager or recruiter, they took themselves off the job market. So, since last fall, as long as four months ago, they lost the opportunity to secure other positions and possibly lost income while waiting for their Target start date. Some likely also told their current employers that they were quitting and moving on to work for Target. How many were able to get their old jobs back? Most likely, these soon-to-be Target employees spent their own money relocating or moving houses and buying things they have been holding off buying, anticipating their new financial success. (Target says it allowed employees who were given moving allowances to keep that money). If I was one of the future employees, I would be surprised, angry and depressed. Some may have invested in legal counsel only to find that they had no recourse. Hiring managers from small, medium or large companies have a great opportunity to help their brand and build positive relationships with future employees. Treat them like customers! Heres how to do it (listen up, Target!): Treat all candidates with respect by thanking them and showing your gratitude that they applied and interviewed. For those who interviewed, close out the process with an offer or a thank-you-and-decline letter â€" in a timely way. Provide a thoughtful on-boarding program for each new hire, ensure they meet their new team members, and provide them the information they need to do an excellent job. Id like to close with a message to Target Corp. Your website shares your corporate culture: Behaving ethically and with integrity is essential to maintaining our reputation as a great place to work, as a preferred shopping destination, and as a responsible corporate citizen. Well, you certainly missed the Target by rescinding those job offers! Your definition of integrity and responsibility and mine are very different!

The idea of resumes has changed in recent years because it is now used to determine the chances of the employee applying for a job.The basic structure of resumes has not changed. The important points in this format of the re sume are the section headers which contain the position, name, contact number, and the date the job was offered. There should also be the date of hiring, the name of the company location. Then the details of the job, such as title, responsibilities, duties, salaries, experience, education, education and skills, etc., are listed. The entire content can be in the first page of the resume. But when it is not feasible to write all the details in one page, the first three to five lines can be used to include them.
